Immaculate Conception College (ICC), Benin, has witnessed three phases in the management history of the College. The first phase of management was when the Catholic Mission first established the Government seized and took over all private and missionary schools, and turned them into public schools. However, the third phase in the changing history of management is the recent return by the Government of Edo State of ICC to the Catholic Mission the original owner of the College.
FIRST PHASE: The Catholic Bishop of Benin City, His Lordship, Bishop Patrick J. Kelly established ICC in 1944 with Rev. Andrew O. Rouke SMA as the First Principal of the College. The College started with only 30 students (at the present site of St. Paul’s Minor Seminary) until 1954 when ICC was approved as a Secondary School. At the time, the students had to go to St. Patrick’s College, Asaba to complete their Secondary Education. In 1966, the first batch of Higher School Certificate (HSC) students was admitted. Due to high quality of staff and the dedication of each successive Rev. Principals the College became popular as a center for excellent morals, teaching and learning. It was a preparatory ground for University Education within and outside Nigeria
